FLORENCE, AL – Christian Price, a doctoral student in the Department of Kinesiology, has been awarded a Fellowship through the Alabama Space Grant Consortium as part of a program funded by NASA. The aim of the Graduate Research Fellowship is to encourage talented individuals to pursue research and careers in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math fields that support NASA’s mission directorates.
“Being selected for the NASA Space Grant Consortium Fellowship is an incredible honor,” said Christian. “It’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to explore how space travel impacts human performance and collaborate with some of the top researchers at Johnson Space Center. I’m looking forward to growing as a researcher and making a meaningful contribution to space exploration.”
Applications for the fellowship are accepted and evaluated by the ASGC Campus Directors and Management team. Christian is the first student from UNA to receive this sought-after fellowship, highlighting his exceptional promise and UNA’s commitment to fostering innovative research.
Christian is pursuing his PhD in Exercise Science and Health Promotion, focusing on advancing the understanding of physical and cognitive performance in active individuals. His dissertation research, supported by the fellowship, is chaired by Dr. Lauren Killen and will examine the effects of a novel energy supplement on cognitive function and physical performance in recreationally active females. The project will provide insight into the potential role of energy supplements in optimizing cognitive and physical performance, particularly in environments with physiological stressors such as spaceflight.
“This distinguished fellowship provides Christian with a unique opportunity to collaborate with NASA researchers at the Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas, this summer,” said Dr. Killen. “He will have the opportunity to travel to Houston to work directly with NASA scientists, where he will gain hands-on experience and contribute to ongoing research efforts related to spaceflight and astronaut health.”
In addition to his research, Christian will participate in STEM outreach, hosting an opportunity for children to learn how exercise science initiatives are used to benefit astronaut health and research. This initiative aims to inspire future scientists, engineers, and explorers by demonstrating the importance of exercise science in space exploration.
